Dental Crown Aftercare: A Guide to Oral Hygiene

Have you recently undergone a dental crown placement procedure, or are you considering getting dental crowns soon? Cosmo Dental Centre has compiled some useful tips regarding crown placement aftercare to give you some insight on how to best take care of your dental hygiene following such a procedure. According to our dentists, proper aftercare can not only help you heal faster but can also help promote better general oral health in the long term.

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are commonly used by dentists to fix issues such as cracked, broken, or decayed teeth. They are tooth-shaped, which allows them to discreetly cover damaged teeth.

They can be made from a wide variety of materials, depending on the individual’s needs, the placement of the damaged teeth in the mouth, the patient’s preferred budget, and aesthetic value. Commonly used materials include porcelain, ceramic, resin, and various metal alloys.

One of the main reasons dental crowns are so popular is that they can be easily customized to mimic the shape and appearance of the patient’s teeth, thus creating a seamless finish.

Post-Crown Placement Care Instructions

Here are some tips on how to take care of your oral hygiene following a crown placement procedure, as per our dentists’ recommendations:

  1. Brushing and Flossing Techniques – The first step in maintaining good oral hygiene is to ensure that you brush your teeth and floss properly and regularly. Our dentists recommend brushing twice daily using fluoride-based toothpaste. We also encourage you to floss daily. Although brushing and flossing might feel a bit jarring immediately after a crown placement procedure, it is very important not to skip either habit. Regular daily brushing and flossing can notably prevent decay and gum disease near the newly placed crowns.

  1. Use a Mouth Guard at Night – If you are prone to jaw clenching or teeth grinding during your sleep, our dentists recommend getting a mouth guard. This will protect both your natural teeth and your new dental crowns from damage.

  1. Dietary Considerations – Following a crown placement procedure, we recommend avoiding hard, crunchy, and sticky foods such as hard candy, raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, caramel-based desserts, pretzels, and granola bars, among others. Instead, incorporate soft foods such as soups, mashed potatoes, and thoroughly cooked or steamed vegetables into your diet.

  1. Regular Checkups with Your Dentist – Make sure to visit your dentist regularly. Follow-up appointments following a crown placement procedure are crucial to monitor the healing process and the potential emergence of dental issues. Based on changes in your dental health, your dentist will also be able to suggest follow-up dental services if needed.
